The Royal Oak in Cartmel has always been a favourite in our family for lots of reasons – the low beams, the roaring fire and the river (beck) side garden. All the pubs in cartmel are nice in fairness but the garden of the Royal Oak is particularly special on a summers day. If you have dogs it’s a good choice because you can go for a walk in Cartmel Park then back to the pub for drink. Equally kids can have a ball in the garden feeding the ducks and trying to cross the beck without getting wet – it’s only shallow and there are some stepping stones (or there used to be!)
The pub has recently been taken over by the owners of the Kings Arms, 10 metres away across the cobbled medieval square, so you can walk over and make a night of it. The pub has been restored giving it a shabby chic feel with melted candles on the tables and red leather chairs. There is sky TV showing the latest football and rugby (2 screens) and they are tastefully located so the pub still retains a lovely charm. The food is excellent value – I had a chilli burger accompanied by a free pint of ale while watching the rugby the other week. The menu is enormous with a wide selection of burgers and pizzas – you can view the Royal Oak menu here. Food is also served ALL DAY, every day between midday and 10.00pm
You can walk back to Bankfield House up Allithwaite Road or you can call Trevor and he’ll give you a lift on 07968 341460. For other Taxis in Grange and Cartmel read our list here (it’s not very big!)
