Another favourite for the kids in our family is going for a walk along Grange Promenade. This is one of the most popular walks in Grange over Sands and if you are into bird watching this is a real gem as thousands of waders stop here. To get there you don’t need to drive – walk down to Kents Bank station and follow the road up the hill. 200 metres up the road on the right there is a sign that says “To the Promenade”. This takes you along a very quiet route with spectacular views of the glorious sands of Morecambe Bay.
Grange-over-Sands was an Edwardian resort and it retains some of that old world charm. There are plenty of places to have a cup of tea. My favourite is the café on the promenade itself but it’s not open all year round. I am like most people also susceptible to a Higginson’s pork pie from the best smelling shop on Main Street.
The return route could either be along Kents Bank Road and Allithwaite Road – or over the Hospice (see map below). If you go over the Hospice it will be a proper walk however up a steep hill through Eggerslack Wood and up on to the fell. That’s around 8 miles in total and a full day’s walk. Not one for the kids, but you’ll be rewarded by this view on top. If you are taking kids and can’t manage the walk back you could take the train I suppose – all of a mile back to Kents Bank!
